History of the Saint George Order
Seven Centuries of Heritage
The Order of Saint George was founded in 1326 by King Károly Róbert I of Hungary, representing one of Europe’s oldest chivalric traditions that has endured to the present day:“…established without fault according to both secular and ecclesiastical law, never declared invalid, and whose lawful existence has not ceased; in the year of Our Lord 1990, in Visegrád, it was revived from its state of dormancy, and its suspended activity was reopened to all knights who embrace Christian values and seek to direct their actions, according to the teachings of the Gospel, for the good of the Hungarian homeland and the salvation of humanity.” (Constitution of the Order of Saint George)
As we celebrate the 700th anniversary of its foundation, we do not merely commemorate a historical date, but an intellectual and spiritual heritage that has shaped our communities across seven centuries.
The purpose of the Order’s foundation was to live and transmit the ideals of faith, loyalty, courage and service within an organized community framework. The chivalric ideal is not merely a historical concept, but a moral and communal compass.
The Chivalric Ideal
The figure of Saint George – a symbol of faith and courage – stands at the core of the Order’s spirit. The defeat of the dragon is not merely a legendary scene, but a symbol of standing for truth and a just cause.
The chivalric tradition is built upon three fundamental pillars:
• Faith and moral integrity
• Loyalty to community and values
• Service for the benefit of society
These principles have enabled the spirit of the Order to endure through changing historical eras.
Historical Continuity
Seven hundred years do not represent uninterrupted institutional operation, but continuity of spirit. Throughout history, the chivalric value system has been renewed and adapted time and again, while remaining fundamentally true to itself.
After a period of dormancy during the communist era, the Order was reorganized in 1990 in Visegrád through the initiative of historians and archaeologists. Its constitution was re-established in the spirit of tradition, while meeting the expectations of the late 20th century.
The investiture ceremony is traditionally held after a Holy Mass, in a solemn setting, most often in the Knights’ Hall of the Royal Palace of Visegrád – the very site of the original foundation in 1326.
In the modern era, the Order of Saint George places strong emphasis on cultural and community service alongside the preservation of historical heritage.

The anniversary is not only a celebration, but also a responsibility.
Seven centuries of heritage call upon us to:
